I once owned an exceptionally beautiful piece of quilted maple. After shaping and sanding the instrument, I suddenly discovered a wormhole – right in the visible area. This discovery hit me hard, because up until then, this piece of wood had been perfect.
But a few years later I came across another top that immediately captivated me: There were so much holes in it and the worms had left a pattern in it that looked like a natural work of art. This organic design had so much character that I couldn't simply discard the wood. Instead, I decided to build an instrument from this seemingly ruined, worm-ridden piece – precisely because of its unique history.
